How the rail works

What UPI actually is

UPI is a real-time payment rail introduced on 11 April 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India.

Money moves over a Virtual Payment Address — a UPI ID tied to a KYC-linked mobile number — or by scanning the QR code the system generates for each account. There is no float balance: the debit hits your bank account directly at the moment of authentication.

The rail is bank-to-bank and runs around the clock, including weekends and holidays. A payer authenticates with a PIN under two-factor authentication; the receiver sees the credit within seconds.

Because the mobile number carries KYC, the same number links to the bank accounts you can pay from. That single link is what makes the system easy to onboard and hard to fake.

  • Virtual Payment Address (UPI ID) tied to a KYC-linked mobile number
  • QR code generated for each account, scannable by any UPI app
  • Two-factor authentication with a PIN at the moment of payment

How big the system is

More than 640 million transactions run through UPI every day, against 639 million a day for Visa.

In 2025 UPI handled over 250 billion transactions worth US$3.4 trillion, about 50% of the world's digital transactions. The daily count of 640 million puts it just ahead of Visa's 639 million a day.

The value side grew even faster than the count: from ₹1 lakh crore in FY 2017–18 to ₹139 lakh crore in FY 2022–23, a 168% compound annual growth rate.

Volume is not concentrated in metros. About 70% of UPI users sit outside Tier-1 cities, and over 80% of newly registered users come from Tier-2 cities.

What you can send in one transaction

The standard per-transaction limit is ₹200,000, raised from ₹100,000 in March 2020.

Limits are set per use case, not per user. A standard transfer is capped at ₹200,000. The Retail Direct Scheme and IPO applications carry a higher ₹500,000 ceiling, set in December 2021.

Feature phones on UPI 123PAY were raised from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 on 9 October 2024. A delegated secondary user has a cooling-period daily limit of about 5,000 for the first 24 hours after delegation.

The limits table on the Limits by Use Case page compares all of them side by side with units and dates.

  • ₹500,000 for Retail Direct Scheme and IPO applications, set December 2021
  • ₹10,000 on UPI 123PAY for feature phones from 9 October 2024

A payment from number to PIN

Six steps: verify the KYC-linked number, create the UPI ID, open the QR or type the receiver's UPI ID, enter the amount, authenticate with the PIN, check the debit.

The procedure is the same whether you scan a QR code or type a UPI ID by hand. The KYC-linked mobile number is verified first, because it is the anchor for every account you can pay from.

At the moment of payment the app asks for the PIN under two-factor authentication. The debit posts to your bank account immediately and the receiver's credit follows within seconds.

The usual failures are crossing the case limit — sending more than ₹200,000 in a standard transfer — or hitting the 24-hour cooling limit on a newly delegated secondary user. Both are rejected before money moves.
